New AST Batch: L.Lerkenfeldt, Luke Holland + Cooper Bowman.

A new batch of noise from three Melbourne solo artists.

AST054: L.LERKENFELDT – “URBAN BODY” c19

Debut release from visual/sound artist Lisa Lerkenfeldt. There are two forms here: concise drum machine pieces and longer drone pieces. It is the latter which make up the bulk of this tape. Lerkenfeldt employs processes to dictaphone field recordings resulting in them being stripped of any connection with their original form.

AST055: LUKE HOLLAND – “PURGATORY” c33

"Purgatory is the latest solo release from Luke Holland, who is also the founder of the long-standing underground cult industrial label, Trapdoor Tapes. Progression-wise, Purgatory falls under the banner of the death-industrial genre, and reflects a similar position to the initial incarnation and ideology of Holland’s previous projects Mshing and duo Armour Group. Perhaps more disciplined in concept and execution, Purgatory is the second part of the sequential and thematically minimal new project, which started with prior release - Decomposition." - Harriet K Morgan

AST056: COOPER BOWMAN – “BLUE TACT” c20

A new tape compiling various short tape loops of me playing this weird little synth my uncle bought me. The result is a kind of repetitive ambience.

New batch of lo-fried techno and industrial coming in January 2016.

CB - Cough Syrup CS Download.

AST420. Recorded and released on the same day. 14 copies for friends of the label. No chrome-plated wheels are being reinvented here, Cough Syrup (imaginative title huh) is just four tracks of chopped and screwed tape-loops.

AST050: Brando's Island - Liquid Soul / Cryo Capers 7" Available.

Here it is, the 50th release on Altered States and it's a corker. I am stoked to be involved in releasing these two tracks of deranged antipodean weirdness. The folks involved in Brando's have previously done time in some of the best groups Australia has offered over the last few years; Velvet Whip, The Zingers, Chrome Dome, Pathetic Human, Flat Fix, Soma Coma, the list goes on. While their previous output gives you a vague idea of the eclecticism of BI's collective taste, nothing can prepare you for the unique sound produced by them. Vibraphone, synth, drums, vocals. The New Wave is here.

Distort will have copies by the end of the week, Repressed Records not long after. US distro through Feel It and Little Big Chief Records.

Digital / direct orders here:

If you live in Melbourne, email me to arrange delivery or come over for a beer.

Brando's Island Track Streaming / Launch Show.

Like something straight off the set of New Wave Theatre, Brando's Island are a mutant-punk four-piece with members spread across Melbourne and Newcastle. Their debut 7" released on vocalist, Richard Costa's, Million Dollar Records imprint earlier in the year will go down as one of 2015's highlights for me. So it is with great pleasure that I present the b-side of their upcoming 7", "Cryo Capers".

To mark the occasion, Brando's are launching their record at Bar Open with some of the best electronic artists Melbourne has to offer.

New Tapes: Italianz, Cervere + Pleasure Brothers.

AST049: ITALIANZ – “FUCK YEAH, TUTANKHAMEN” c54

Italianz is a duo comprising Ben Nibboy Taylor and Rob. Together they cover a variety of styles to great effect. The masters I was given for Fuck Yeah, Tootie were close to two hours long, I’ve whittled down the recordings to the absolute cream. Despite the cull, Italianz still cover a lot of ground here, equally nailing synth-pop bangers alongside minimal, stuttered electronics. All of this is done with the two’s contagious sense of humour.

AST051: CERVERE – “PHRENIC DERIVATIVES” c22

Cervere is Sean McMorrow (Noematic Oblivion, Radical Creation, 50% of Dry Mouth). After a self-released Cervere tape on his own label, Vir Rash and what turned out to be my fave tape of last year, “Excessive Liquidity” on Future Archaic, McMorrow brings two longform pieces to the table for Altered States. Cervere is minimal electronics at its finest, utilising an old-ass Roland drum machine and sampler loaded with plenty of wildcat samples to create a truly unique sound.

AST052: PLEASURE BROTHERS – “ECSTASY” c17

Since the dissolution of Teen Ax, Tony McKey has been working steadily as Pleasure Brothers with tapes being released on a variety of labels, including Mazurka Editions and Vir Rash. McKey is adept at creating tasteful discomfort through the use of reel-to-reel tape machines and effects. Ecstasy is two brooding tracks of dark electronics for the most misanthropic of noise lovers.

AST Related End Of Year Lists.

These things are generally pretty stupid. But here we go.

I chose some of my standout releases / shows here.

Nic Warnock selected the Dry Mouth 7" and Flat Fix tape in his list here.

Flat Fix somehow creeped into a list of the best Australian tracks of the year at Mess and Noise.

Aaaaand finally Flat Fix was selected by Stacey Wilson as one of her local releases of the year here.

New AST Releases: ENAK, Dry Mouth / Club Sound Witches + Freejack.

AST045: ENAK – “CUSSION” c17

Kane Ewin is a former member of Castings / Cistern Corrupt and one half of relatively new duo Mince Poppers. He has gone under a variety of aliases over the last coupla years, Dingbats and Pisstank among them, but he has settled on Enak for his solo debut, Cussion. You could think of him as carrying on the tradition of early Severed Heads and the Terse Tapes compilations, but that would still not be doing justice to his oddball tape, synth and reel-to-reel antics. Recorded by Moocow Leechskinz in Hamilton, Newcastle and housed in artwork and with an insert designed by the Enak himself. Unique muzak from a unique guy, a rare feat to be sure. NOTE: while I'm taking orders for these, they will take awhile to get out as each one is being assembled in Newcastle before I get them.

AST046: DRY MOUTH / CLUB SOUND WITCHES – “SPLIT” c92

Two zoned duos team up for a split of bucket bong-rippin’ proportions. First up is Melbourne’s Dry Mouth. After a 7” on Vir Rash and the Imm8rtal cassette on Breakdance The Dawn, their side-long track sees them continuing the long-form psychedelic noise of the latter, constructed from tape loops, oscillator, synth, vocals, drum machine and more effects than you can poke a stick at. CSW is the electronically-focused duo of Matt Earle and Nicola Morton. Following a string of releases, both on Earle’s BDTD and other fine purveyors of damaged sound, their piece here is a drippy and swirly goop of vocals and minimal electronics. Amazing artwork by Moocow Leechskinz, image of Charlie The gammy-eyed Chook courtesy of the Newcastle Herald.

AST047: FREE JACK – “TRAGEDY / COMEDY” c14

Free Jack is the solo electronic guise of Liam Osbourne, also the mug behind PE project Lucid Castration and the excellent Future Archaic label. The A-side, “Tragedy”, is a bass and kick driven number showing the project at its most caustically danceable yet. The intensity of his sound only increases as the track progresses. “Comedy” strips away any rhythmic elements leaving you with something much closer to Lucid Castration in its searing feedbacked synth textures and crackling distortion.
